1.History of Valentine’s Day
Every February 14, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine.
The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today.
Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By theMiddle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France. While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St.
2.Valentine’s Day in Cambodia
Valentine’s Day is celebrated every day from the human heart, but the February 14th anniversary celebrates the day’s celebration to showcase each person’s heart. The purpose of Valentine’s love is to be loving and loyal and forever. We have a history of national love stories for sacrificing our lives for the cause of the motherland, such as Lokta Kleang Moeung, Uknha Seung Kuy, and love novel such as TomTeav.
These want to show that Khmer have story look like foreigner too, but we do not raise those issues to commemorate the festival every year. The fact that we celebrate the festival is that it is a flow of cultural that can not be ruled out, but we need to understand the meaning of it and follow it, don’t do wrong in moral. We enjoy Valentine’s Day and we still keep our traditional Khmer culture as it is when we understand it well.
The festival began in Cambodia around 1997, when the students in Phnom Penh began practicing from one to another, spreading throughout the country. The disadvantage of misconceptions about Valentine’s Day, which we call Valentines, is because of the joyful and unique youthfulness that attracts them, making them blind to misconceptions and making mistakes. We can continue to celebrate this festival as a hobby, but smart people are not stupid in short time and regret the mistakes in long time of life. We need to control ourselves and guide ourselves to self-worth more than flowers, give your value is bigger than any flower or kind of gift.
Enjoy today and the future you are still happy with your right thinking and do in right way!
The Cambodian Constitution recognizes Buddhism as a state religion, which has always celebrated Buddhist festivals. Despite being celebrated annually, for Cambodian youths, there is currently little interest in this celebration, compared between Meakh Bochea Day or Pisak Bochea Day and a celebration of Christmas or Valentine’s day , they know Western’s festivities more than Khmer’s festivities. This is the effect of love from every human being that the social can not stop it, but society can direct their way to be good actions.
